    Since we opened our doors in 1985, South Shore Counseling and Psychological Services has always been focused on developing our patients' sense of emotional well-being, and restoring quality of life to the children, adolescents, adults, and families we work with.

    What We Do

    Our outstanding clinical staff consist of 50 psychotherapists: psychologists, mental health counselors, and social workers. We strive to ensure that balance and happiness are restored to the lives of the individuals, children, and families with whom we work. We also interface with school personnel, families, and other medical professionals whenever necessary in order to provide the most comprehensive treatment possible. Everyone values the health and happiness of their loved ones, and at South Shore Counseling and Psychological Services, our primary mission is to help you restore health, happiness and balance to your own life, as well as the lives of your loved ones.

    Our private practice has three locations: Wantagh, Amityville, and Great Neck. Please click on the "Our Locations" tab above for the addresses of our three locations. Offices are open 7 days a week. Sessions could be conducted either in-person at one of our offices, or virtually for clients anywhere in New York State.

    Our Therapists

    Dr. William James is the Director of South Shore Counseling and oversees all psychotherapy and clinical activities. Max Benezra, EdM, MA, LMHC is the Assistant Director of South Shore Counseling, and oversees various parts of our practice, including our psychotherapy graduate training program.     We are experts in the treatment of anxiety and depression for clients of all ages. We can help turn doubt & insecurity into confidence & clarity. Sessions held 7 days a week. Most insurances accepted including, GHI, Cigna, Emblem, Blue Cross, United Health, Oxford, 1199, Aetna, etc. For those clients without coverage your rate is reasonably priced at $95.

    Lock & Key Therapy is a full service psychotherapy practice helping clients of all ages and treatment needs. Our group of 20 clinicians have the training, experience and compassion to get you the results you seek. The goal is to focus on the positive when we can and to draw on our inner resources to help cope and manage during stressful times.I have been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for over 20 years. I am a graduate of Stony Brook University and Hunter College School of Social Work. I have broad experience working with children, adolescents, adults, couples and families in managing stress, anxiety, depression, loss, bereavement and divorce issues.

    I have worked with children and families in both mental health clinics and in school settings. Understanding individuals in a family context, I focus on improving communication patterns and use cognitive behavioral techniques. I help to educate parents on the relationship between children's behavior and developmental stage, and utilize positive behavior management strategies.

    I have extensive experience with school related issues. I have written and facilitate a parent program called Parenting... How can something so simple be so difficult to do? In addition to my private practice, I work as a consultant to develop and facilitate workshops for different groups on a variety of topics.

    Dr. Robert L. Villanella earned his Ph.D. in psychology in 1986 and, subsequently, completed a postdoctoral certificate program in clinical neuropsychology. Dr. Villanella also completed an externship in holistic neuropsychological rehabilitation at the Brain Injury Day Treatment Program at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine-N.Y.U./Mt. Sinai Hospitals Center. Dr. Villanella is a licensed psychologist both in New York and in New Jersey. He serves as an adjunct professor of psychology at Montclair State University. Dr. Villanella is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychological Specialties and a Fellow of the American Psychotherapy Association. He is a member in good standing of the American Psychological Association, American College of Forensic Examiners, American Psychotherapy Association, Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback.

    The Balance Mental Health Counseling (Balance MHC) practice was founded on the basis of expanding mental health services to the communities of Long Island.     The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) reported that in 2017 an estimated 46.6 million adults aged 18 or older in the United States with Any Mental Illness (AMI) 1.
