Rapid Mood Screening Scale

The Rapid Mood Screener (RMS) is a quick and easy self-report screening tool that can be used to identify symptoms of bipolar disorder. The scale assesses symptoms of mania, hypomania, and depression over the past week. It is designed to be completed in less than five minutes and can be used in a variety of settings, such as primary care clinics, hospitals, schools, and mental health clinics.

The RMS includes questions about:

  • Elevated or irritable mood

  • Increased energy and activity levels

  • Decreased need for sleep

  • Grandiose thinking (exaggerated beliefs in one's own abilities)

  • Racing thoughts

  • Impulsive or reckless behavior

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Increased talkativeness

  • Distractibility

  • Persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness

  • Loss of interest in activities

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Changes in appetite and sleep patterns

  • Fatigue

  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness

  • Thoughts of suicide

The RMS is not a diagnostic tool and should not be used to make a definitive diagnosis of bipolar disorder. However, it can be used to identify individuals who may be at risk for the disorder and who should be referred for further evaluation and treatment.
